How Symbolic Rings Can Support Your Yoga Practice
One very important facet of having a yoga practice is cultivating drishti, the focused gaze or point of concentration. You may have heard this cued in an asana or meditation class before, in poses such as virabhadrasana II (warrior II), balancing poses, or as an option to keep your eyes open while meditating. Drishti can also be carried into daily life off the mat as well, having a focal point to come back to, such as a mantra, prayer, or intention, that you return to throughout your day.
As a mom, I am constantly anchoring my focus back to my children. They are the "why" of everything I do, as other parents I know can relate. Having a symbolic ring that represents them gives me a tangible object to anchor my attention and remind me why I practice—to nurture myself and be fully present for my family. When I wear a ring that represents my daughters, it becomes a personal drishti point. During challenging poses, frustrating moments, or just everyday life stressors, I am able to glance at the ring and reconnect with my intention.
Another important component of having a yoga practice are the yamas (ethical vows) and niyamas (internal observances). Ishvara Pranidhana is a niyama that represents the practice of devotion and surrender to something bigger than yourself, being God, nature, love, the Universe, or whatever name you use to describe a greater force. My children bring me back to surrender and help me to practice gratitude and devotion to them as a mother, as well as the Divine power that brought us together.
My ring acts as a daily reminder of this love, purpose, devotion, and surrender. It encourages mindfulness in everyday moments, whether I’m cooking, working, or simply breathing. It is a tool I use to bring me back to my practice.
Symbolic Ring Ideas
If using a symbolic ring as a tool for your practice resonates with you, here are some ideas of rings that can represent or honor your children.
Custom Birthstones
Birthstones are a great way to symbolize your family, as there are specific gemstones that correlate with each birth month. For example, my daughters were born in May and February, so my ring would include green emerald and purple amethyst. Gemstones also have specific spiritual properties too, which could be another way to bring intention into your practice and daily life.
Engraved Names or Dates
I love the idea of engraving a name or birthday onto a ring as well! This is such a classy, dainty option that can directly draw your awareness back to your littles.
Engraved Birth Flowers
Like gemstones, each birth month has a correlating flower. I love the idea of having the flowers woven together on a ring, especially for multiple children!
Engraved Hand or Foot Prints
This is similar to the name/date idea, but I just love how personal it is! It's like having a piece of your child with you wherever you go.
Custom Breast Milk Rings
The journey of breastfeeding my babies is something deeply personal and meaningful to me. Seeing the jewelry created with the milk my body made to nourish my babies always brings deep gratitude and reverence.
I hope this goes without saying, these are not requirements for having a yoga practice as a mom, or anyone for that matter! Just a mindfulness tool that personally helps me practice drishti and devotion that I thought I would pass along. I would love to hear tools that you use, tangible or not, to help incorporate mindfulness into your days or draw awareness back to your practice.
With love and gratitude,
Hayley
